Going on Assignment in Prague July 2026

What does it take to become a foreign correspondent? This July, 13 aspiring participants from the United States, Germany, Greece, and the Czech Republic came to Prague to find out.

From 11–26 July, Transitions hosted its flagship annual Going on Assignment program in partnership with the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK). Guided by experienced correspondents and editors, including Raphael Minder (Financial Times), Michael T. Martinez (UTK), Jana Ciglerová (Czech Radio), Michael Winfrey (former Bloomberg), and Parisa Sohbati (RFE/RL), participants immersed themselves in the realities of international reporting.

Working under newsroom conditions, they pitched original stories, developed sources, reported from the field, and produced multimedia journalism while meeting demanding deadlines. The program also included newsroom visits to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and Seznam.cz, a Czech news and information portal, practical workshops in news writing and video storytelling, and one-on-one mentoring on story development, editorial ethics, and reporting techniques.

“Overall the course was amazing,” said Fani Apospori, a participant from Greece. “I’m very, very happy that I took it. Worth it 100%, great choice and I have learned tons of things that otherwise I’d have to spend time doing a masters to learn.”

Beyond the classroom, participants met journalism fellows from our global education program and exchanged ideas with students from Makerere University in Uganda and Hong Kong Baptist University, creating an international learning environment that encouraged collaboration across cultures, regions, and media landscapes. Watch our video.
