Media in the Post-Truth World: The New Marketplace of (Dis)information
The surprising decision of Brexit and the equally stunning win of Donald Trump in the U.S. presidential elections provided dramatic confirmation of long-term trends in the way people consume information. This provided further evidence that so-called legacy media is now playing an even smaller role in influencing choice. The central challenges facing the media in 2017 are to regain some of the lost credibility that led to a general lack of trust and to also idenfity new roles or redefine old ones in the current communication ecosystem. The Prague Media Point Conference that was held Nov. 2-4 covered questions about what affects people’s political choices and overall local and worldviews, the sources that are now most trusted, and if people are even searching for the “truth” or simply what fits their already pre-defined opinions.
