Foreign Correspondent Training Course
Going on Assignment in Prague – July 2017
Date: July 9, 2017 – July 17, 2017
Location: Prague, Czech Republic
In Going on Assignment, a course hosted by Thomson Reuters from July 9-17, 2017, participants from the US, UK, Ireland and Switzerland learned about what it takes to be a foreign correspondent from industry professionals. Participants learned techniques for
better storytelling, how to use data in international reporting, what it is like reporting during conflict, and how sexism impacts women’s and men’s roles in media. Participants had the opportunity to pursue an actual story on the streets of Prague with extensive coaching both before their arrival and throughout their writing process. They were given advice on structuring their stories, locating quality sources and incorporating multimedia. Participants were helped in setting up interviews and finding interpreters and ended up with memorable, real-life experiences and, just as importantly, publishable pieces of foreign reporting to get them started in an exciting career as a journalist.
Along with being given the opportunity to work on their stories, participants got a tour of Radio of Free Europe/Radio Liberty and were able network with other TOL summer course participants at a local Czech brewery and had two free days to explore Prague. The week ended with a presentation of their stories and a farewell dinner on a boat.
If you have a passion for this line of work and want to acquire some practical skills, join us for this foreign reporting course in July 2020!
