In a journalism course hosted by Transitions, 13 participants from the US, Hungary, and the Czech Republic learned what it takes to be a foreign correspondent. From July 6 to July 21, the ‘Going on Assignment in Prague’ faculty of industry professionals taught participants important skills and techniques for effective interviewing and multimedia reporting. They also learned about solutions journalism and what it is like to report from a foreign country. Speakers included Raphael Minder from The Financial Times, Mark D. Harmon from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Jana Ciglerova from Dennik N, Michael Winfrey, a former foreign correspondent and editor who covered major news stories for Reuters and Bloomberg, Will Tizard from RFE/RL and many more. In addition to working on their stories, participants toured Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and visited the Seznam.cz publishing house. There were many opportunities for networking and socializing, such as at a local Czech restaurant or during the four free days they had to explore Prague and neighboring EU countries. The course concluded with a presentation of their stories and a farewell lunch on a boat.
