Michael Winfrey
Michael Winfrey is a former foreign correspondent and editor who covered major news stories around the globe for Reuters and Bloomberg. During a career that took him to more than 30 countries in Europe, Asia and Latin America over almost three decades, Mike reported and wrote about everything from the war in Ukraine and conflicts in the Middle East, to the Greek financial crisis, the expansion of the European Union and the US handover of the Panama Canal. He began as a journalist in 1997 writing about Venezuela’s oil industry before joining Reuters for a 16-year run that included six long-term foreign postings. He joined Bloomberg in 2013 as an editor covering issues including the Europe’s migrant crisis, the EU’s struggle with authoritarian leaders, as well as Ukraine’s Maidan revolution, Russia’s takeover of Crimea and later its full-scale 2022 invasion. He also co-founded Balance of Power, Bloomberg’s flagship daily newsletter on global political and general news events. Mike retired from journalism in 2023 and, when he’s not focusing on beekeeping and mountain biking, helps aspiring journalists hone their skills.
