Barbara

Barbara Frye has been the managing editor since 2010 of Transitions Online, TOL’s flagship publication.

Barbara grew up in Maryland wanting to be a rock star and a journalist. When the time came to choose, she opted for journalism on the assumption – erroneous, it turns out – that being a rock star required some musicianship and singing talent. She is plagued by second thoughts.

After getting her master’s in English, she covered government and politics from the State House for a chain of newspapers in Maryland.

In 2002, she moved to Prague to become an editor at The Prague Post, where she stayed for a year and a half. In the past 12 years, she has reported or edited from 10 countries. She was in Kosovo in 2007, talking to Serbs and Albanians the day the road map was revealed for the province-cum-country’s independence. She has also written about efforts to clean up the landmines that were planted in the Balkans during the wars in the 1990s, press freedom – and survival – in Eastern Europe and Russia, and a host of economic, cultural, environmental, minority, and business issues in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Baltimore Sun, The Christian Science Monitor, and Businessweek, among other publications.
